First Aid / Fire Tinder – 5 Cent Tinder Disinfects Wounds and Starts a Blaze

Sharing is caring!

Not all of us want to spend our life savings on cool expensive gear, so here are some simple tips for making your own fire starters.

Most people know that cotton balls make a great everyday carry, tinder for fire starting. The problem with them is that they only burn for about 10 to 20 seconds. To fix this, many people will add petroleum jelly to the cotton balls to extend their burn time.

Extend Burn AND Treat Wounds:

There is a way you can extend the burn time of your cotton balls. Doing this will also add a valuable first aid item to your survival kit. To do this try using a dab of triple antibiotic ointment on your cotton ball instead of petroleum jelly.

Your antibiotic cotton balls will light with a spark and burn for 2 – 3 minutes. This will give you the time you need to build a sustainable fire. PLUS your cotton balls can be used to clean and disinfect wounds in the field. So they will have a double purpose.

For your convenience, here are links to all the gear you’ll need for this project:
